Pitts­burgh’s Nick Bonino scored 6:32 into over­time to give the Pen­guins a 4-3 win over Wash­ing­ton and clinch the hotly-con­tested NHL Eastern Con­fer­ence semi-fi­nal in six games and elim­i­nate the Stanley Cup ti­tle favourites. The Cap­i­tals ral­lied from a three-goal deficit over the fi­nal 22 min­utes of reg­u­la­tion, but Bonino’s se­cond goal of the play­offs sent the Pen­guins to the Eastern Con­fer­ence fi­nal against Tampa Bay Light­ning.

Phil Kes­sel scored twice for Pitts­burgh and Carl Hagelin also found the net to give the Pen­guins a com­fort­able 3-0 lead. But TJ Oshie gave the Cap­i­tals hope be­fore Justin Wil­liams and John Carl­son then scored to force over­time. Bonino then tapped in a re­bound for the win­ner. Af­ter scor­ing his se­ri­esclinch­ing win­ner Bonino said: “I can’t put it into words right now. I’ve still got chills a lit­tle bit. That’s the best feel­ing in the game. To win a se­ries and have your team­mates around you in the cor­ner, it’s pretty fun.”
