A family’s visit to see their father in Dubai ended in tragedy when he and his nine-year-old son were killed in a traffic accident.

CD Sunny and his 11-year-old boy Alvin died after their car collided with a 4x4 in Al Muhaisnah on Sunday.

His wife Jolly and their four-year-old son Edwin survived, although the boy’s leg was badly broken.

Jolly and her two sons, who live in India, had been visiting their dad, who has worked in Dubai for more than 20 years.

The family had been driving to his home on the Sharjah border from St Mary’s Church in Oud Metha at 11pm.

The driver of the 4x4, an Arab student, is being questioned.

Sunny’s brother Varkeys told 7DAYS the family is devastated.

Speaking from Rashid Hospital, where Edwin is being treated, he said: “I can’t believe that I lost my brother, my best friend. We were speaking on the phone just five minutes before the accident. He was a nice person, too quiet and dedicated to his work.”

He said Sunny worked for a construction firm to support his family, adding: “Jolly is completely shattered, in shock, and can’t believe what happened.”

The priest at St Mary’s described Sunny as a devoted Christian and said he had seen him with his family that evening. “He was a caring man”, he added.

Colonel Ahmed Thani, director of Al Qusais Police Station, said the student drove into the family’s car, causing it to hit a wall. He said the father and son died on the way to hospital.

“The young motorist who caused the accident said he wasn’t speeding and he was trying to avoid another car when he hit their vehicle,” Thani added. Dubai Traffic Prosecution is investigating the accident.
