Writer explains why they are leaving this summer

7 Days in Dubai - - DEAR 7DAYS -

The reason that my family is only buying one-way tickets this summer is very simple. My salary would be going up by 1,596 dirhams. In contrast our rent is increasing by 5,000 dirhams (and we are fortunate enough to have a very conservative and decent landlord); school fees for child 1 by 3,900 dirhams; for child 2 by 4,500 dirhams. My husband has been told that there will be no salary increases in his field for the time being. In fact people are being sent elsewhere on local contracts - there is a risk of redundancy, restructuring and cuts. So after 12 years, we will swap the sun, clean beaches, exotic sand dunes and relative safety for: seasons, fragrant hedgerows, free schooling and cheaper groceries; free medical care and lower bills. It will not be plain sailing and we will miss friends and colleagues. The compensations will not be apparent for a while, but they’ll come. Adieu Dubai! We have loved it here, but it’s time. Mum, Dubai
