Building a foundation for UAE golf development
EGF and Golf DXB launch new squad for Emirati youngsters
UAE National team head coach Greg Holmes believes the launch of a new Foundation Squad will have a major long-term effect on the development of golfers across the emirates.
Last year, the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF) and Golf DXB created a partnership with the aim to introduce the game to UAE nationals. The incentive saw approximately 3,000 UAE national children take part in school taster sessions then take classes at The Track, Meydan Golf.
The success of the introductory classes has now led the EGF and Golf DXB to launch the EGF National Junior Development Programme (NJDP) Foundation Squad.
The group of 15 children will now receive technical instruction, golf specific fitness as well as on-course playing lessons on a weekly basis.
“The introduction of the Foundation Squad is another positive step taken by the EGF,” said Holmes. “With the help of Golf DXB we are reaching goals and seeing the interest of golf growing amongst UAE nationals.
“This Foundation Squad is a great way to award the children who are dedicated and this will add to the process of developing a strong national team.”
Golf DXB’s PGA professional Aaron Williams will lead the group and will work closely with UAE National Team coaches David Condon and Holmes to monitor the progress of the youngsters as they progress through the EGF development programs.
Williams said: “It has been very rewarding to see a group of beginners develop so quickly and really get hooked onto the game.
“From here we will look to introduce the players to the full golf course, getting competent at Par 3 length and then look to move to modified tees.
“Tuition wise, we will be keeping a close eye on set up fundamentals whilst gradually introducing work on swing mechanics and golf specific fitness that are suited to the individuals within the group.”
