En­vi­able abs, tight tri­ceps and svelte sil­hou­ettes – Yas­mine Karachi­wala knows how to achieve the best of Bol­ly­wood physiques. She is a trainer to the stars - in­clud­ing big names Ka­t­rina Kaif (be­low), Sophia Goudry, and Deepika Padukone. The star-trainer is in Dubai, launch­ing A-Tone - a new gym aimed at help­ing women get fit, fast and strong. Karachi­wala trained Ka­t­rina Kaif for the movie Agneepath, which she says was one of the tough­est gigs of her ca­reer. “My big­gest chal­lenge was when Ka­t­rina Kaif was do­ing the song ‘Chikni Chameli’. If you’ve seen that song, she re­ally moves - and she’s wear­ing a small choli with a very low gha­gra (em­broi­dered skirt) and her whole midriff is show­ing. And she said to me “if any­thing jig­gles, you’re dead”. And so we worked. “The thing is, she was ready to put the ef­fort in. She puts in the ef­fort, I put in the ef­fort - there are times where I’d work un­til mid­night with her. It has to be a com­bined ef­fort,” ex­plained Yas­mine (right). “It was a very reg­i­mented life­style - we had to cut out sugar, we had to cut out dairy, we cut out carbs to­ward the end of the shoot two days prior. “We worked out two hours per day, we did a lot of car­dio­vas­cu­lar with pi­lates and func­tional train­ing. Ev­ery day was dif­fer­ent. Plus when I train my clients that hard, I have to give their body time to re­cover be­fore the next train­ing ses­sion. “It’s not just about train­ing, it’s added with ac­tive rest be­cause oth­er­wise, with ac­tors it shows on their face. It’s all caught on-screen so ev­ery­thing has to bal­ance - the nour­ish­ment of the body, skin, ev­ery­thing.” A-Tone has three dif­fer­ent stu­dios, pi­lates, yoga and ‘cross-cuit’, which is de­scribed as a style of more care­ful CrossFit aimed at re­duc­ing prone­ness to in­juries. For those seek­ing a Bol­ly­wood physique at A-Tone, Yas­mine warns it’s not just about get­ting to gym a few times per week. “Nu­tri­tion is 70 per cent of the jour­ney to be­ing fit and ex­er­cise is 30 per cent. I tell my clients, who come in three times a week for an hour, if you cal­cu­late the hours in a week - which is 166 and you’re only giv­ing three hours a week, how are you be­ing ac­count­able in the other 163 hours? It’s a whole pack­age deal.”
