Registration fees for eco-friendly cars should be removed to encourage more people to go green, the Federal Traffic Council has said. Major General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, Head of the Federal Traffic Council and Assistant to the Dubai Police Chief for Operational Affairs, said the council has recommended exempting drivers to make the prospect of smaller engines or hybrid cars more attractive. “We want to encourage people to opt for environmentally-friendly cars such as those that run on electricity,” he told 7DAYS. “Environmentally-friendly cars can reduce pollution and this would help protect the environment.” Among other recommendations made were the removal of the front seat next to drivers in buses of all sizes, which police said have been linked to fatalities. “When buses are involved in crashes, passengers in the front seat often die or sustain serious injuries,” said Al Zafeen. The proposals have been put forward to the Ministry of Interior.
