Nick Bonino’s third-period goal helped the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in the first game of the Stanley Cup final. The Penguins, who also host game two tomorrow (4am UAE), opened the scoring 12:46 into the first period through Bryan Rust and 62 seconds later that lead was doubled by Conor Sheary. Three minutes into the second period, though, Tomas Hertl scored the Sharks’ first Stanley Cup final goal in franchise history and Patrick Marleau levelled the game with a fine wraparound effort on 38:12. The winner came with just 2:33 left as Kris Letang found Bonino, who restored Pittsburgh’s advantage and got them off to a winning start in the seven-game series. “It’s one game, but I think we did a lot of good things,” said Penguins captain Sidney Crosby. “First and third we were really strong, generated a lot of chances. We saw a lot of their strengths, especially in the second, with how good they are.”
