MORE TAX MEANS LESS SMOKING, SAYS HEALTH BOSS
Cigarette prices need to go up by two or three times their current level, according to Dr Wedad Al Maidoor, director of PHC Dubai Health Centres and head of the National Tobacco Control Programme.
Speaking yesterday on World No Tobacco Day, she said: “Most people know smoking is harmful but nobody cares to stop it... There is a push for implementing a 100 per cent hike in customs duty. However, I think it is not enough. We want to impose excise tax also on cigarettes.
Then only will smokers slowly start feeling the pinch and will not buy cigarettes.”
