MURDER SUSPECT IN SUICIDE ATTEMPT
Murder suspect tried to take own life
A man who suspected his fiancée of having an affair stabbed her to death before trying to drown himself in the sea, a court was told.
The Indian man has gone on trial at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court accused of repeatedly stabbing his lover in the stomach with a kitchen knife.
The killing took place in April. Prosecutors said the man was seen wading into Gulf off the coast of Abu Dhabi and an eyewitness called police, who rescued him.
Court records stated that on the day of the alleged murder, the defendant went to the apartment of his Indian girlfriend, who worked as a dancer at a nightclub.
“He didn’t find the woman there,” a prosecutor said.
“So he waited until she returned at around 4am with her workmates, who shared the apartment with her.”
It’s claimed he then asked his girlfriend to have a talk outside the building so they could clear the air about his suspicions that she was seeing other men. The defendant, who was also holding a small bag, told her he had a gift for her.
“Their talk, however, turned into an argument and the man pulled out a knife, which he used to attack the woman,’ the prosecutor added. “He stabbed her several times in the stomach. “He jumped into the water in the Mina area of the Corniche.
“But a person who spotted him phoned police who saved him from drowning.”
The court was told the boyfriend originally confessed to the killing, saying it took place in a jealous rage. But in court he said he was not fully conscious when he gave the statement.
“I didn’t kill her,” he told the judge. “She phoned me and arranged to meet, we hadn’t seen each other for 20 days. “But when I reached her building, I saw her lying outside in a pool of blood.”
The trial was adjourned until September, to allow the court to contact the victim’s family.
