‘Recycling culture must be taught’
A UAE environmentalist says more must be done to teach residents about the importance of recycling. Habiba Al Marashi, chairperson of Emirates Environmental Group, said the group has carried out several awareness campaigns to encourage people to recycle waste and also teach them the importance of recycling to protect the environment. “We have done a lot of environmental awareness but still more needs to be done to educate the public on recycling,” she told 7DAYS. “People need to be taught how to segregate wastes at home and put them in two separate bags before dumping in the bins.” She said although authorities have helped in encouraging people to recycle through initiating waste-recycling programmes such as different coloured recycling waste bins, people need to know how to use the bins to improve the programme’s impact.” “The distribution of the recycling facilities needs to be accompanied by intensive awareness programmes on the techniques of recycling and a complete list of recyclable materials,” she added. “Some residents are not aware of the recycling plan and therefore need to be informed or taught through the distribution of brochures, lectures and other programmes.” Al Marashi urged public departments and other nongovernment organisations to join the campaign to help promote recycling.
