Campaign to focus on ISIS use of children
A social media hashtag is being used to shed light on the use of children by the terror group ISIS. The Sawab Centre, the joint UAE-US initiative to combat extremist propaganda online, said the threeday campaign will be conducted in both Arabic and English on Sawab’s Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram platforms, using the hashtag, #DaeshStealsTheirChildhood. UAE news agency WAM stated that as ISIS repeated losses on the battlefield and defections by its demoralised members, the group is beginning to rely increasingly on child soldiers. Its online propaganda has featured children carrying out horrific acts at the group’s behest, such that the spectre of child executioners and suicide bombers has now become commonplace. WAM reported that the centre’s campaign will “expose this callous victimisation of innocent children” and highlight that children have been reduced to “unthinking, disposable instruments of war”. Since its launch in July 2015, the Sawab Centre has sought to encourage governments, communities and individual voices to engage proactively to counteract online extremism.
