Abu Dhabi boosted by Euro­pean trade

Fire­men have swapped their fire hoses for foot­ball boots to play in the Abu Dhabi Civil De­fence Di­rec­tor Gen­eral’s Ra­madan Tour­na­ment. The event sees crews from 10 sta­tions com­pete in foot­ball as well as other sports such as vol­ley­ball and tug-of-war. This year’s com­pe­ti­tion also in­cludes a women’s chal­lenge and chess tour­na­ments. The tour­na­ment’s open­ing ac­tion fea­tured a foot­ball game be­tween the Gen­eral Direc­torate of Civil De­fence Team and the Cap­i­tal’s Civil De­fence Sta­tions Team. The Cap­i­tal Team won the match 2-1. Adeeb Al Afifi, the di­rec­tor of For­eign Trade and Ex­port Sup­port at the Abu Dhabi Depart­ment of Eco­nomic De­vel­op­ment, has told a fo­rum that Euro­pean coun­tries ac­counted for 40.7 per cent of all for­eign di­rect in­vest­ment in Abu Dhabi in 2014. Al Afifi was speak­ing be­fore rep­re­sen­ta­tives of the Euro­pean Union, Abu Dhabi Qual­ity and Con­form­ity Coun­cil and the Ger­man Emi­rati Joint Coun­cil for In­dus­try and Com­merce. Di­rec­tor and Deputy CEO of the Ger­man Emi­rati Joint Coun­cil for In­dus­try and Com­merce, Dr Dalia Abu Samra-Ro­hte, also told the sym­po­sium that trade be­tween the UAE and Germany stood at Dhs66.1 bil­lion so far this year. While Dr Wolf­gang Pen­zias, Trade Coun­selor for the Del­e­ga­tion of the Euro­pean Union to the UAE, added that the EU's trade pol­icy is aimed at open­ing new mar­kets through re­mov­ing other bar­ri­ers to trade.
