Abu Dhabi boosted by European trade
Firemen have swapped their fire hoses for football boots to play in the Abu Dhabi Civil Defence Director General’s Ramadan Tournament. The event sees crews from 10 stations compete in football as well as other sports such as volleyball and tug-of-war. This year’s competition also includes a women’s challenge and chess tournaments. The tournament’s opening action featured a football game between the General Directorate of Civil Defence Team and the Capital’s Civil Defence Stations Team. The Capital Team won the match 2-1. Adeeb Al Afifi, the director of Foreign Trade and Export Support at the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, has told a forum that European countries accounted for 40.7 per cent of all foreign direct investment in Abu Dhabi in 2014. Al Afifi was speaking before representatives of the European Union, Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce. Director and Deputy CEO of the German Emirati Joint Council for Industry and Commerce, Dr Dalia Abu Samra-Rohte, also told the symposium that trade between the UAE and Germany stood at Dhs66.1 billion so far this year. While Dr Wolfgang Penzias, Trade Counselor for the Delegation of the European Union to the UAE, added that the EU's trade policy is aimed at opening new markets through removing other barriers to trade.
