By Shoshana Kedem A Serbian diplomat has said that plans by a UAE firm to redevelop part of Belgrade will create thousands of jobs and inject billions of dollars into the economy.

Milos Perisic, charge d’affaires at the Serbian Embassy in the UAE, spoke to 7DAYS following a protest in the Serbian capital on Saturday where demonstrators claimed Belgrade Waterfront would “degrade” the city.

The project along the banks the river Sava, led by Abu Dhabi-based property developer Eagle Hills, includes office blocks, flats, hotels and a shopping mall, as well as the 200m-high Kula Tower, company’s website says.

Perisic told 7DAYS the that the development will create more than 10,000 jobs.

“The UAE-Serbia project Belgrade Waterfront is really one of the best projects for our capital city, Belgrade,” he said.

Perisic added: “The impact on our economy will be positive”, as several domestic construction companies are building residential units and the tower.

“They are employing domestic workers and they are contributing to our GDP,” he said.

The project could also attract tourists and international trade. “From the other side, high quality of the flats, hotels, offices and excellent location [on the river bank] attracts people from other parts of Serbia and Europe as well to visit Belgrade, so we will have increased number of tourists and business people who will start their business and run it from Serbia,” he said.

Eagle Hills says on its website that it specialises in the “development, creation and reinvigoration of urban centres”.

7DAYS made several attempts to contact the firm but was unable to get a response.

The 30-year-old actress will stand before the judge along with her pal iO Tillett Wright and her neighbour Raquel Rose Pennington as they provide evidence on the former couple’s toxic relationship in a hearing about extending her domestic-violence restraining order against the actor.
