A woman died while her boyfriend was helping give birth at home, a court heard.

The Filipina became pregnant during an affair with her ex-boyfriend, also Filipino. Fearing she would be reported to the police if she went to hospital, she called her new boyfriend and tried to give birth at her home in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region. But she bled so heavily she lost consciousness and died, Al Dhafra Criminal Court heard.

The new boyfriend, whose nationality By Ismail Sebugwaawo hasn’t been given but is Arab, and the father of the child are both on trial. Prosecutors said that during delivery, the Filipina suffered severe blood loss.

The boyfriend allegedly tried to hide her body afterwards. It was not mentioned in court papers what happened to the baby.

Police found the woman’s exboyfriend, who got her pregnant, was staying illegally in the UAE and knew about her death, the court heard. The Arab man is charged with having an affair and abetting in the delivering the baby. He admitted the affair but denied the second charge, claiming she died on the way to hospital.

“She was my girlfriend and I was helping to take her to the hospital when she died,” he said.

The second defendant is charged with illegally impregnating the woman, not informing police about the woman’s death and illegally staying in the country.

He admitted the first charges but denied having knowledge of her death.

The trial has been adjourned.
