THIEVES STOLE FROM CRASH FAMILY
Family tricked by pair
Two men who were found guilty of stealing from a family, after they first pretended to offer help at the scene of a car accident, have had their jail sentences reduced on appeal.
The decision was made at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court of First Instance which yesterday heard how two men had robbed cash and gold jewellery from a family who were trapped in their car following an accident.
The car went off the road after the Emirati man, who was driving, lost control and overturned, trapping his wife and three sons in the vehicle as well, sustaining serious to medium injuries in the process.
“Before police rescue teams arrived at the scene, the two Emirati defendants who witnessed the crash hurried to go to the victims after pretending to offer them help,” said prosecutors. “The men instead took Dhs13,000, three mobile phones and a bag containing gold jewellery and fled the scene without helping them get out of the crashed car.” Police later rescued the family and took them to hospital for treatment.
Police tracked down the thieves through the victims’ stolen phones.
The men had previously been given one year in jail after they were found guilty but challenged the sentence.
One of the defendants said he had bought the phone he was caught with at a market and didn’t realise it was stolen. The judge maintained the earlier verdict but reduced the severity of the sentence.
