The griev­ing fa­ther of a young girl who was killed in a road ac­ci­dent says his fam­ily has been shat­tered in “one hor­ri­ble se­cond”.

Sankar Futka­palli is in mourn­ing af­ter his eight-year-old daughter Kaavya Futka­palli was killed while try­ing to cross the road in Sharjah.

The in­ci­dent took place on Al Is­tiqal Street on Thurs­day as Kaavya, who is In­dian, was part of a group look­ing to get to the other side of the street.

A po­lice pa­trol and paramedics were called to the scene, but Kaavya died of her in­juries.

The man who was driv­ing the car that struck her was de­tained for ques­tion­ing.

Futka­palli, who works as a me­chan­i­cal en­gi­neer in Sharjah, said: “My wife was with my daughter at the time, but it was a crowd of peo­ple there try­ing to cross the street. My daughter took a few steps on the road and a car hit her and she died at the scene.

“The man who was driv­ing the car was taken into cus­tody. He was driv­ing his car very fast, ac­cord­ing to my wife. He came out of nowhere and hit my daughter.”

He added: “At this time, my wife is in shock and is not speak­ing to any­one.

“We have been left heart­bro­ken and we never imag­ined some­thing like this hap­pen­ing. We are keep­ing my son (five years old) safe and close to ‘We have been left heart­bro­ken, we never imag­ined some­thing like this hap­pen­ing’ us. One hor­ri­ble se­cond changed our whole lives.”

Futka­palli said the ac­ci­dent hap­pened op­po­site of Mega Mall.

He said: “I was in the of­fice when I got the news and my brain is still un­able to process the news. “She’s sud­denly gone from our lives and it feels – Sankar Futka­palli, fa­ther of ac­ci­dent vic­tim like our lives have been turned upside down.

“My wife was very care­ful when she was try­ing to cross the road. She al­ways is. We aren’t un­e­d­u­cated, we know how to cross the road. It’s a very hor­ri­ble se­cond that turned our lives upside down.”

Kaavya at­tended the Our Own English High School in Sharjah.

The ac­ci­dent was one of a se­ries of fa­tal road in­ci­dents in Sharjah over the week­end, in­clud­ing the death of 33-year-old Egyp­tian woman who was knocked down on Malk Ab­dul Aziz Road.
