Young girl hit by car in front of mother
The grieving father of a young girl who was killed in a road accident says his family has been shattered in “one horrible second”.
Sankar Futkapalli is in mourning after his eight-year-old daughter Kaavya Futkapalli was killed while trying to cross the road in Sharjah.
The incident took place on Al Istiqal Street on Thursday as Kaavya, who is Indian, was part of a group looking to get to the other side of the street.
A police patrol and paramedics were called to the scene, but Kaavya died of her injuries.
The man who was driving the car that struck her was detained for questioning.
Futkapalli, who works as a mechanical engineer in Sharjah, said: “My wife was with my daughter at the time, but it was a crowd of people there trying to cross the street. My daughter took a few steps on the road and a car hit her and she died at the scene.
“The man who was driving the car was taken into custody. He was driving his car very fast, according to my wife. He came out of nowhere and hit my daughter.”
He added: “At this time, my wife is in shock and is not speaking to anyone.
“We have been left heartbroken and we never imagined something like this happening. We are keeping my son (five years old) safe and close to ‘We have been left heartbroken, we never imagined something like this happening’ us. One horrible second changed our whole lives.”
Futkapalli said the accident happened opposite of Mega Mall.
He said: “I was in the office when I got the news and my brain is still unable to process the news. “She’s suddenly gone from our lives and it feels – Sankar Futkapalli, father of accident victim like our lives have been turned upside down.
“My wife was very careful when she was trying to cross the road. She always is. We aren’t uneducated, we know how to cross the road. It’s a very horrible second that turned our lives upside down.”
Kaavya attended the Our Own English High School in Sharjah.
The accident was one of a series of fatal road incidents in Sharjah over the weekend, including the death of 33-year-old Egyptian woman who was knocked down on Malk Abdul Aziz Road.
