Address ‘firefighter’ not guilty
An off-duty firefighter who wandered into the Address Downtown during the blaze and shot a video himself as the building burned has been cleared of a criminal charge. The Emirati, 34, was found not guilty of mocking the efforts of fire crews during the drama on New Year’s Eve. Dubai Court of First Instance heard that the video was widely circulated on Whatsapp and amounted to ridiculing the job crews were performing, but a judge said there was a lack of evidence. The man said he is a firefighter with Abu Dhabi Civil Defence and was given permission to help. In the video, the man wandered through smoke-filled corridors, smoking a cigarette and swigging from a can of Pepsi. He can be heard shouting “everything is under control, I’m controlling the fire”.
