EMPLOYER JAILED OVER MAID TORTURE DEATH
10 years for boss who tortured worker
A woman has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for torturing her maid to the point where the woman collapsed and died.
The 35-year-old Emirati was found guilty at Dubai Court of First Instance of assault leading to the death, which she had denied.
Prosecutors said the victim, who was from the Comoros Islands, was assaulted with an electric cable iron bar. She was pronounced dead on December 28, 2015 after the defendant called for an ambulance, saying the maid had collapsed.
A medical report showed the victim’s body had burns and human bite marks, as well as several older injuries, which had become infected. The court was told the injuries had never been treated.
A second maid, aged 19, also from the Comoros Islands, said she started work for the defendant in December and saw her violently assault her colleague.
“I worked in the flat in Al Qusais and she used to punch her and kick her,” the witness said. “I was sent to work for the accused’s sister in another house, where I was treated badly by the sister. I returned back to the defendant five days later. I saw the defendant continue to beat the deceased and pull her hair and push her.”
She was sent back to work for the accused’s sister but kept in touch with the victim by phone. “She said the defendant kept assaulting her,” the maid testified. “But later our boss knew we were talking and I heard nothing until I learned of her death.”
