Shoppers surprised as make-up artist puts impersonation skills to the test
Zayn Malik fans got quite a shock when they thought they had spotted the star walking round Mall of the Emirates on Tuesday night.
He had the looks, he had the beard, the hair, the team of bodyguards, and, naturally, screaming fans in tow.
Except he was a she, and shoppers young and old were the victims of expert make-up artist Alicia Goveas, who wowed passers-by with her convincing Zayn disguise.
7DAYS arranged for the 23-year-old to show off By Sarwat Nasir her remarkable talent after she made a name for herself on Instagram, turning herself into celebrity icons using make-up. She has more than 9,500 followers. Fans could be forgiven for thinking it was the British hunk scouting out Dubai ahead of his gig at the new Autism Rocks Arena on October 7. Indian artist Goveas has also mastered the looks of Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Kanye West and Game of Thrones character Jon Snow among others. ‘Zayn’ was bombarded with at least 40 selfie requests from shoppers, with crowds trying to get round the bodyguards. Alicia said: “I can’t believe the reaction I got. “I got to be a celebrity for a day and it felt amazing. I would do this all over again if I could.”
Goveas was given three ‘bodyguards’, - who are actually wrestlers with the Dubai Pro Wrestling Academy.
One fan said she was convinced because of her look and the guards - creating the ‘celebrity look’.
Mandy Warren, a 17-year-old fan, said: “From afar, I knew it was a celebrity. And then I thought ‘ is that Zayn Malik’? I was scared to ask for a selfie because of the bodyguards but I couldn’t miss a chance like this. “When I was told that it was a make-up artist, I was shocked. I didn’t think it would be a girl. She’s good at this.”
Marisol Juarez, a 25-year-old fan from Colombia, said: “I saw all of the young girls taking photos with him, so I knew it could be one of those One Direction singers.
“She seems like a great make-up artist if she has all these people convinced. “Some people might be a bit sceptical up close, but she can pull it off from farther away.”
Goveas is passionate about face and body make-up and wants to pursue it as a career. She added: “So many people came up to me and it was overwhelming.
“It goes to show that make-up isn’t just something you do to look good, it’s a skill and I’m so lucky to have this skill.”
