Who’s gonna drive you home?
Careem, the app-based taxi booking service, has announced plans to make 25 per cent of all journeys in Dubai driverless by the year 2030. The initiative will see battery-powered, self-driving pods being used across the MENA region. The pods, which are electric and driverless, can drive individually or by attaching themselves to other pods to form a bus-like structure in which travellers will be free to move from one pod to another. The initiative is the result of a partnership between Careem and Next, the company behind the pods. Once operational the pods will be able to seat six passengers and allow up to 10 standing passengers. They can also be “specialised” to provide smart services such as a modular restaurant, living accommodation, entertainment, office and battery swap services. The service will also provide personalised pick-up areas.
