Family demand justice after ‘attack’
A baby girl who was allegedly beaten by her family’s maid has died in hospital.
Nine-month-old Salamah Al Mazmi passed away at 6am yesterday after two weeks in a critical condition.
Dr Khalid Khalfan bin Sabt, Deputy Technical Director of Al Qassimi Hospital, said: “Salamah was suffering from severe brain damage, a brain haemorrhage and breathing difficulties.
“Despite the efforts of a team of doctors and paramedics, Salamah’s heart stopped beating.”
The child’s body has been transferred to a forensic laboratory for further investigation.
Her father, Salem, was among the grieving family that gathered at the hospital yesterday.
Essa Othman, 63, Salamah’s grandfather, told 7DAYS: “Funeral prayers will be held at Al Sahaba Mosque.
“I can’t believe this happened to Salem By Nawal Al Ramahi and his child. I hope the maid gets the death penalty.”
Ahmed Essa, Salem’s brother, added: “Our heartbroken family demands justice.” Salem, 28, spoke to 7DAYS last week and said: “My heart bleeds for my daughter. Things like this should not happen.
“We are in a state of shock; never expected this to happen to our child who was born with a beautiful smile.”
Police in the Al Wasit area of Sharjah were alerted about the case when Salamah was rushed to intensive care on July 13.
One of the domestic workers, a 27-year-old Indonesian woman, has admitted she assaulted Salamah, officers said. Police have referred her to public prosecution.
