Zayn Malik ‘lookalike’ on her 15 minutes in the spotlight
make-up artist who surprised shoppers when she impersonated former One Direction star Zayn Malik says she now gets recognised in the street and has been flooded with beauty products,
Alicia Goveas teamed up with 7DAYS for a stunt that saw the 23-year-old tour Mall of the Emirates posing as the former One Direction star.
Shoppers flocked to have their picture taken with Alicia, who was flanked by fake bodyguards, and our video was picked up across the globe.
One month on, Alicia said she has enjoyed her 15 minutes of fame, but also had to deal with harsh headlines in the US media and unpleasant comments on social media.
The Indian expat said: “The response has been tremendous.
“The video went everywhere. MTV, Comedy Central, New York Post and lots of other media have covered the stunt.
“I woke up the next day and I was so overwhelmed with the response.
“There has been a few times where I’ve been talking to someone and they’d be like ‘wait, where you in that Zayn Malik video?’”
But along with the positive comments and support were critics mocking her efforts, which she said was difficult to deal with.
The New York Post ran headlines such as ‘Mall-goers in Dubai somehow believe this woman is Zayn Malik’ and ‘This mall is full of the most gullible people ever’.
One social media user wrote on Facebook: “Doesn’t look like Zayn from any angle.”
Another wrote: “Definitely not Zayn, really poor make up... that's why she was able to fool ppl there.... no chance here sweety.”
However, others were supportive, with Mike Ivanova saying: “I cosplay myself, I can tell
between make-up and stuff. No hate of course, love your effort!”
Alicia said: “People were saying things like ‘she’s too short’ or ‘that looks nothing like him’ and it bothered me the first day, but then I told myself that ‘I’m not really a male - and I’m not really Zayn Malik’. I’m a make-up artist that can transform herself into looking similar to celebrities. There’s a huge difference.”
Alicia currently works freelance but dreams of making it big in the profession, adding: “I would love to continue my career in this field.”
