Mall’s on the move again
The Mall of the World project is shifted to another location
The much-vaunted Mall Of The World looks further away than ever.
It was announced yesterday that the location of the mall would now be moving to a site on Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road.
This is the third location that has been associated with the mall that was announced in a blaze of publicity as “bigger than the Vatican City”.
When the mall was announced in 2014, it was claimed that it would boast more than 100 hotels and apartment buildings and a 7km indoor street network.
Initial plans said it would be built on Sheikh Zayed Road opposite Mall of the Emirates.
There was no suggestion as to where the new site of the mall will be exactly.
Dubai Holding issued a statement yesterday, attributed to Ahmad Bin Byat, Vice Chairman and Managing Director.
“Tourism remains a major part of Dubai’s diversification strategy and Mall of the World will be a critical part of that vision,” he said.
“Dubai Holding is committed to developing Mall of the World, a major retail and leisure destination in the region, and believes that the new location on Sheikh Mohammad bin Zayed Road, will be an outstanding home for the project, as it will allow Dubai Holding to further expand as needed in the future according to market needs.”
7DAYS contacted Dubai Holding for further comment, to be told nobody was available but we should “stay tuned”.
The project was launched in July 2014 by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
“The growth in family and retail tourism underpins the need to enhance Dubai’s tourism infrastructure as soon as possible,” Sheikh Mohammed said at the launch.
“This project complements our plans to transform Dubai into a cultural, tourist and economic hub for the two billion people living in the region; and we are determined to achieve our vision.”
