Fined for over­crowd­ing homes

Of­fi­cials in Abu Dhabi have slapped fines on land­lords who car­ried out unau­tho­rised work in vil­las and apart­ments. Abu Dhabi Mu­nic­i­pal­ity said it fined 16 own­ers who par­ti­tioned homes or added struc­tures to their prop­er­ties with­out mu­nic­i­pal ap­proval. It also is­sued warn­ings to 19 other land­lords. The vi­o­la­tions were spot­ted dur­ing a se­ries of in­spec­tions last month.

Fines of be­tween Dhs20,000 and Dhs50,000 were im­posed on each of the land­lords. The mu­nic­i­pal­ity has car­ried out a num­ber of cam­paigns to ed­u­cate the pub­lic about the risks of par­ti­tions and il­le­gal struc­tural ad­di­tions to vil­las and flats. Of­fi­cials told land­lords not to al­low more than three peo­ple to live in one room and said fam­i­lies rent­ing out part of their prop­erty are break­ing the law.
