Chiefs will Party in the Park

Are you a DJ looking for that big break? This could be for you

Popular nightspot 360° is on the hunt for its next resident DJ – and the Jumeirah Beach Hotel venue is making a big party out of it. Budding DJs are invited to submit their sound mixes up until the end of this month for a chance to join the live DJ battle on October 6, which will be judged by British DJ Shortee Blitz and other resident DJs.

Sounds easy? Not so fast. Because hopefuls need to pass the discerning taste of general manager Samuel Graham and, perhaps most importantly, the urbanite crowd. Personality and individuality will be key, as Graham explains: “I want the crowd to see DJs they won’t forget. A DJ’s track selection is an extension of their personality and I want that to come flooding through. I also like to see a DJ enjoying themselves in the DJ box with the crowd - it is a party after all. I like to have residents that develop their own style and put their stamp on the night and the slot they play in.”

The winner of the battle will receive a one-year contract and play the weekly Thursday night party, joining a roster that includes Ron E Jaxx, CN Williams, Jack Woodcock, Miss Foster, BJ Benyamin, Danny Kwang and DJ 3GK.

Spinning is a serious job. According to Graham, the qualities that make any DJ stand out are the ability to read a crowd and picking the right tracks. “Anyone can learn how to mix, but it takes real skill and confidence to admit that what you’re playing might not be working and change direction. Only the very best can do it within the music policy of the night, and that’s what I want at 360,” he said.

Graham believes the live battle is something for all music lovers to enjoy – simply because the sheer level of entertainment will make for a great show.

On the night, each artist will have 30 minutes to showcase their stuff.

“There is a high level of skill required in mixing hip hop and R‘n’B, the genre has a huge technical element to it, not to mention such a wide spectrum of styles,” said Graham. “If the first DJ really steps up then they will be a tough act to follow, which could lead to an unbelievable display of skills from the rest. Personally speaking, I hope that all the finalists blow the judging panel away and make it extremely hard to pick a winner.” To enter 360°’s battle of the DJs, send mixes to 360entertain before September 28. The finalists will be announced on October 2.
