‘Master’ drug farmer guilty

A well-ed­u­cated gov­ern­ment em­ployee has been jailed for 10 years for turn­ing his villa into a sprawl­ing mar­i­juana fac­tory. The Emi­rati – who has two master’s de­grees – was found grow­ing 38 plants at his home, Dubai Court of First In­stance heard. The 46-year-old stud­ied abroad be­fore re­turn­ing to the UAE and smug­gling seeds into the coun­try. Dubai Po­lice in March said it was “the big­gest mar­i­juana fac­tory we’ve found in the UAE” to date and a “highly pro­fes­sional op­er­a­tion”. Po­lice images showed plants stacked in rooms and ar­ti­fi­cial lights hang­ing from ceil­ings to boost growth. De­spite the quan­tity found – the plants seized weighed 380kg in to­tal – he claimed he has never dealt drugs. “It was for my per­sonal use,” he said in court ear­lier. The court also fined him Dhs50,000 and con­fis­cated the mar­i­juana plants.
