‘Master’ drug farmer guilty
A well-educated government employee has been jailed for 10 years for turning his villa into a sprawling marijuana factory. The Emirati – who has two master’s degrees – was found growing 38 plants at his home, Dubai Court of First Instance heard. The 46-year-old studied abroad before returning to the UAE and smuggling seeds into the country. Dubai Police in March said it was “the biggest marijuana factory we’ve found in the UAE” to date and a “highly professional operation”. Police images showed plants stacked in rooms and artificial lights hanging from ceilings to boost growth. Despite the quantity found – the plants seized weighed 380kg in total – he claimed he has never dealt drugs. “It was for my personal use,” he said in court earlier. The court also fined him Dhs50,000 and confiscated the marijuana plants.
