Brought to power on crime pledge

7 Days in Dubai - - SPECIAL REPORT -

Decades fighting crime as a prosecutor and maverick mayor paved the way for Rodrigo Duterte’s presidential campaign, during which he won huge support among Filipinos weary of high crime and drug-addled neighbourhoods. The 71-yearold secured close to twice the number of votes of his nearest rival in May, before taking to office in late June. Even in the days before he was sworn in, he threatened criminals: “If you destroy my country, I will kill you.” Duterte is known for his profanitylaced speeches and curses, with his brash style likened to that of Donald Trump, although he detests the comparison and says the American billionaire is a bigot.
