Group chased man down street
A suspected thief was chased through the streets by a group of men after stealing a wallet that contained just Dhs5.
The Emirati threatened his Pakistani victim with a small knife before making off with the cash in the Muraqqabat area of Deira, Dubai Court of First Instance heard.
The 21-year-old, described as jobless, is on trial accused of armed robbery.
Judge Mohammed Jamal heard how the alleged crime on June 4 led to the involvement of a number of men who came to the aid of the victim.
The 33-year-old Pakistani man told the court he was walking to a restaurant for breakfast in Muraqqabat when he heard someone approach him from behind.
He said he turned around to see the man, who had a small knife, which he placed on his throat and demanded he hand over his money.
The victim testified: “I fell to the ground and handed over my wallet to him. I managed to escape and saw some of my countrymen, who
said they would help me catch the thief. “My wallet contained my ID and Dhs5.” The court heard the group of men ran after the Emirati until he entered a small residential building and they locked the front door and called police.
A police patrol arrived outside the building to find “tens” of people surrounding the building chanting “thief”.
A Dubai Police patrol officer, an Emirati aged 60, testified: “Before we arrived, the accused threw the wallet to the victim, thinking he would be able to leave, but they refused to let him go.
“We opened the door and arrested the accused, who confessed to the robbery.”
The said the suspect put a knife to the victim’s throat and police searched him and initially found nothing.
But the officer added: “Eventually we discovered that he had hidden a small knife in his underwear.
“He claimed that he was a poor person and had been watching people in the street before deciding to steal from the victim.”
The suspect failed to show in court and the trial was adjourned so that he could be brought from the detention centre.
