Hotel heroes made wish come true
Hotel acts out comic plot to make boy’s dream come true
It took two weeks of preparation and involved chambermaids and executives alike, but the staff of the Fairmont Dubai gave one youngster a thrilling day out to remember.
Saud, a four-year-old Emirati boy with type one diabetes, was treated to a day at the Sheikh Zayed Road complex as part of a project run by the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
Saud endured a difficult year but had his dream of meeting his favourite superheroes fulfilled last week.
Staff detailed to 7DAYS how they meticulously planned the visit, including having one member of staff abseil down the hotel’s atrium.
They also transformed the Penthouse Suite into a superhero den, complete with a Spider-Man - Saud’s favourite - montage on the wall.
Then followed an action-packed plot that the staff wrote themselves, which saw Spider-Man kidnapped by the villains.
Mini Spider-Man Saud was then on a mission to save his character with the help of the other heroes. “We started by putting the story line together,” said Rachelle Hill, Director of Marketing and Communications at the hotel.
“We conducted several rehearsals before the event – just to make sure that everyone knew their part and the sequence of the story.
“Most of the superheroes are members of the executive committee consisting of the hotel manager, director of human resources, director of sales and marketing, director of rooms, financial controller, director of revenue, executive chef and director of food and beverage. There were a total of 25-30 Fairmont colleagues involved.”
She said the abseil “required a lot of rehearsal”.
Hill added: “We added this part in the story line to make the whole act feel real for Saud.
“Spider-Man of course had to gather some courage to do the stunt. His courage was paid off when he saw Saud waving enthusiastically to him with a big smile on his face.”
The Make-a-Wish Foundation started in the UAE in 2003 and it focuses on granting the wishes of children living with life-threatening medical conditions.
The foundation has granted more than 2,000 different wishes since its inception to children from different nationalities in the UAE.
