Alvarez: Golovkin should be fearful of me
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez insists that he will face feared middleweight Gennady Golovkin and that he has no problem with the fight being at 160lbs.
The Mexican superstar will face WBO superwelterweight champion Liam Smith in Texas today (5am UAE time) but is already looking ahead to a blockbuster showdown with Golovkin.
Canelo was previously accused of ducking the Kazakh after giving up his middleweight title in order to move down a weight class. However, the 26-year-old is adamant that he wants to face Golovkin and is unconcerned about fighting the knockout specialist. “Any day, any time. When the negotiations are done and the fight is done, I will be ready. They need to worry about it, not me,” said Alvarez. “I’m not worried at all about going to 160lb. I’m a strong fighter, I’m a fighter who can adapt to my surroundings.
“I can’t tell you now what I will be like at 160 as I don’t know yet. We will see in a couple more fights in how I feel and look. We will see what comes.
“I will say this one more time. They need to worry. They need to make something happen.”
Golovkin stopped Kell Brook in five rounds in his last contest to extend his undefeated record to an impressive 36 wins, with 33 knockouts.
Meanwhile, Canelo has suffered just one defeat to Floyd Mayweather.
