Clinical Canelo stops brave Smith
Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez delivered the perfect body shot to stop Liam Smith in his tracks and win the WBO super-welterweight title.
The British champion had put up a brave challenge, but after being floored twice, the end came in the ninth courtesy of a bone crunching left hook to the rib cage.
Smith could not beat the count and more than 50,000 fans inside the AT&T stadium rose to their feet to salute their Mexican hero. “I told you I was going to give you a great fight and bring you the championship, and here it is,” Canelo told the ecstatic fans.
“Liam Smith was a resilient fighter. I felt he was very strong in the beginning, so I felt I had to put that body work in so slowly, so he would dwindle and I did my job.”
Having improved his record to 48 wins, one loss and one draw, Alvarez quickly turned his attention to fearsome middleweight Gennady Golovkin.
The 26-year-old claimed Golovkin recently rejected a fight with him but stated he is ready to challenge the knockout artist.
“I fear no one. I was born for this, and even though many people may not like it, I am the best fighter right now,” he added.
“About a month ago we offered him twice as much. But I’m ready.”
