A woman has described how her marriage descended into a nightmare after she learned of her husband’s drug addiction.

The Emirati, aged 29, has asked Sharjah Sharia Court to grant her a divorce from her husband, also 29. She claimed her husband beat her and threatened to set her car on fire.

The husband, who did not appear in court, also has an outstanding criminal case against him for threatening behaviour.

The wife, who asked not to be named, told 7DAYS outside the court that she could take no more of their marriage.

She said: “I feel like I’m in hell living with my addict husband.”

She said she had no idea of his hashish and tramadol use when they married.

The woman added: “We have been married for the past two years.

“I was shocked to learn that my husband, whom I married with tremendous expectations, is addicted to drugs. I found out about his addic- tion about three months after we got married.”

She has a child aged 18 months and said she is determined not to lose her daughter. The woman said: “I lodged several complaints with Sharjah social services, police, and currently I’m standing in court to get divorced and ensure I have the right to be with my child.

“He once told me to go to court and file for a khula divorce, a divorce at the insistence of the wife, in exchange for her rights.

“I want to gain custody of my daughter and he should pay alimony to his child.

“I believe I should fight for my daughter’s rights.”

She said three months ago, her husband was sentenced to prison for other drug-related cases in Ajman.

Her hearing was adjourned until next month.

‘I’ve lodged complaints with police and I’m here in court to ensure I will be with my child.’ – Claims of the abused woman
