App firm takes on 2-for-1 ri­vals with din­ing app

here are a num­ber of 2-for-1 apps that seek to make the UAE’s high­price food and bev­er­age costs more af­ford­able, but there of­ten ap­pears to be one catch: you need a buddy.

A new app named VoucherSk­out is tar­get­ing bar­gain-hunters who want to take ad­van­tage of deals when on their own, by of­fer­ing 50 per cent off.

VoucherSk­out was launched by Alia Khal­ifa Al Na­booda and David To­bias, busi­ness part­ners at Dubai’s Acu­men Ad­ver­tis­ing, two weeks ago.

spoke with Alia, pic­tured be­low, about break­ing into a mar­ket dom­i­nated by brands such as The En­ter­tainer.

Why is 50 per cent off bet­ter than 2-4-1?

“We wanted a unique sell­ing point - 50 per cent is bet­ter be­cause it can be used by one per­son, so you don’t have to pur­chase 2 of some­thing.

“And it’s a bet­ter deal be­cause with 2-for1, the item that is dis­counted is usu­ally the cheaper item. But with 50 per cent off, you know no mat­ter what you choose you will get it half price.”

How did you come up with the idea for VoucherSk­out?

“David had been think­ing about this con­cept for a while, he re­alised the mar­ket needed some­thing like this.”

What kind of feed­back have you re­ceived so far.

“So far, the feed­back has been pos­i­tive. We’ve had a lot of down­loads [since Septem­ber 6] and have about 5,000 reg­is­tered users. It’s just go­ing to get big­ger.”

Do you think you can com­pete with es­tab­lished brands like the En­ter­tainer?

“Yes, def­i­nitely. I think com­pe­ti­tion is good for ev­ery com­pany. It makes them bet­ter, it makes us bet­ter. There’s enough peo­ple in the mar­ket for us all.”

Is the app avail­able in dif­fer­ent lan­guages?

“Not yet. We will add an Ara­bic op­tion, es­pe­cially as we plan to ex­pand to dif­fer­ent coun­tries, we will lo­calise the app to that spe­cific coun­try.”

How many busi­nesses have signed up to VoucherSk­out?

"We have ap­prox­i­mately 600 of­fers across 150 mer­chant part­ners. Many mer­chants said ‘come back when you have launched for busi­ness’. So now our team is work­ing on re­vis­it­ing those mer­chants and grow­ing our mer­chant net­work."

Do you have an es­ti­mate on how much money your cus­tomers will save each year?

“It de­pends on your lifestyle. I mean if you’re go­ing out to restau­rants a lot, ob­vi­ously you’ll save a lot. We hope that it en­cour­ages peo­ple to go out more and en­joy. That is the point of cre­at­ing VoucherSk­out.”
