Emirates Airline has confirmed it is charging economy passengers to reserve their seats ahead of time. In an announcement on Monday the Dubai-based airline said the fees applying to its two lowest fare economy class seats will come into effect from October 3. The new fees range from Dhs55 for short-haul flights from Dubai to Dhs147 for long-haul destinations such as the US, Canada and Australia. Picking seats will still be free for passengers checking in online two days before departure, the airline said. “Emirates can confirm the introduction of a minimal charge for those looking to select their Economy Class seat in advance, for tickets issued on or after October 3, 2016,” an Emirates spokesperson said in a statement. “The charge is only applicable on Special and Saver fares in Economy Class and will vary depending on the duration of the flight.” Children will be exempt from the fee. 7DAYS readers hit out at the new charges calling them “totally scandalous” and “pathetic". One reader Naz Mood said: “Pathetic. I’m fed up of companies who want to charge their customers for the most basic customer services and sadly this is becoming more and more common in the UAE. It’s sad to see such a giving and generous country reduced to the same moneygrabbing tactics used in other parts of the world.” Another reader said: “It’s not a lot of money in the scheme of things, compared to the price of a ticket, but that is beside the point. Emirates is not a low-budget airline and classed with the likes of Ryanair, FlyBe, EasyJet etc.” Chris Lawrenson said: “Well, I’m using Etihad from now on.”
