‘Killer butcher was inspired by horror movies’
Suspect tells police how he chopped cousin's head
A butcher murdered a female relative and severed her head and hands before burying her remains in two different emirates, Dubai Police have said.
Glen Ambro carried out the brutal killing after being inspired by horror films, officers told a news conference yesterday.
The Filipino, who worked as a butcher, was arrested at his home in the Abu Hail area of Deira this week – four months after the headless torso of Manormeeta Salwaro Dadi was found in Al Warqa.
Dadi’s head and hands were only discovered this week when Ambro took police to a second burial site in Ajman.
Lt General Khamis Mattar Al Muzaina, Director of Dubai Police, said: “He was shocked when we arrested him – he thought he had got away with murder.”
The police chief said Ambro – who is an illegal immigrant – had borrowed Dhs10,000 from Dadi. It is believed the pair were cousins and the woman was killed when she asked for the money back, he said. Al Muzaina said officers were unable to identify the victim with her head and hands missing but believed she worked as a maid. Police carried out DNA checks on 9,751 domestic workers that had run away from their sponsors in the UAE. He said: “It was a difficult crime to solve, as there was no head or hands to identify the body. We believed the body belonged to an Asian woman and from the clothes we thought she was a maid. “A DNA test matched with one maid reported missing from a family in Abu Dhabi, and it was confirmed that the body was her. We started checking her friends and relatives.” Al Muzaina said officers suspected Ambro when they discovered he was a butcher. He said: “From the way the head and hands were cut, we knew the killer was expert. “[The suspect] confessed that he borrowed Dhs10,000 from her and decided to kill her when she started asking him to return the money. He went to meet her inside his vehicle, a Toyota Yaris. He had covered the front seat passenger with a garbage bag. “He then stabbed her several times until she passed out.” Al Muzaina said Ambro dumped the body in Al Warqa that day then hours later, at 2am, went to Ajman, dug a hole and burned the head and the hands before burying them. Gen Khalil Ibrahim Al Mansouri, Assistant Chief of Dubai Police for Criminal Investigations, said the suspect confessed that he had planned to kill her after watching horror movies, adding: “He planned the murder based on movies, especially zombie movies.” Ambro has been referred to public prosecution.
