The children of a woman who was killed by their father, with help of his first wife, have pardoned him in return for blood money.

The Emirati husband and his first wife are on trial at Abu Dhabi Criminal Court, charged with beating and starving the man’s second wife to death.

Prosecutors said the Emirati man repeatedly beat the woman with a solid object. He is also accused of burning her body and depriving her of food for days.

His first wife is accused of helping. Prosecutors said the pair also systematically tortured the victim’s two children – a boy and a girl – who was left disabled as a result of the abuse. The woman confessed to torturing the two children.

The lawyer representing the two children presented a letter to Chief Justice Idris bin Mansour showing that the children have waived their rights against retribution and decided to pardon their father, and his first wife, in return for blood money.

The lawyer also asked the court to make the woman pay damages to the children for torturing them and causing them permanent disabilities.

Police officers earlier told the court they had found the defendant’s second wife dead during a raid on the man’s property in Baniyas in Abu Dhabi in 2014 after a tip-off.

“The woman died because of excessive beatings and torture. She also suffered from malnutrition,” said prosecutors.

The husband confessed to prosecutors that he had beaten the victim with his hands, as well as kicking and hitting her with a cane during their six year marriage.

The trial was adjourned to October 16.
