UN wel­comes Ye­men aid fund

The United Na­tions World Food Pro­gramme ( WFP) has thanked the UAE af­ter it con­trib­uted Dhs22 mil­lion ($6 mil­lion) to pro­vide food as­sis­tance to more than 100,000 peo­ple in Ye­men. Reem bint Ibrahim Al Hashemi, Minister of State for In­ter­na­tional Co­op­er­a­tion, and Ertharin Cousin, WFP Ex­ec­u­tive Direc­tor, signed an agree­ment at the UN Gen­eral Assem­bly in New York. The WFP will use the funds to buy 7,000 met­ric tonnes of sta­ple food­stuffs in­clud­ing wheat, pulses, veg­etable oil and su­gar, as well as wheat soya blend, a spe­cial prod­uct to pre­vent and treat mal­nu­tri­tion among chil­dre. Cousin said: “We can al­ways count on the gen­eros­ity of the UAE and its peo­ple in these dif­fi­cult times.”
