Ashwin helps India secure crushing win
Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin claimed six second-innings wickets to help India celebrate their 500th Test with an impressive 197-run win over New Zealand. Set an improbable victory target of 434, New Zealand were bowled out for 236 in the middle session on the last day. Ashwin (6-132) completed his 19th five-wicket haul in 37 Tests as he picked off the last three wickets to secure a comfortable victory. “It’s been a very good Test, from the second day onwards when New Zealand were batting really well myself and Ashwin were saying how we would need to show good resilience to win it,” said India captain Virat Kohli. “Credit to them, the reason the match went on to the final day was because of the guts they showed.” The second Test starts on Friday in Kolkata.
