“That’s all well and good, put this in to practise and you will discover that those who are on the lower scale of salaries automatically have their companies withholding their passports. I worked for a company in RAK who were formerly contacted by the British Embassy requesting the return of my passport. Their response was simple, we keep you passport or you don’t get paid!! All of the other staff had already succumbed to the fact the company held their passports. Tough nut to crack, you complain, you get fired!!”

“If they insist on holding it then ask them for a deposit in cash or ask for one of the senior managers passports to keep hold of whilst they have yours.”

“It’s illegal under UAE law. It’s also illegal under most international law, if you open your passport there will be a statement which talks about your passport remaining property of the head of state/government.”
