Lee Westwood believes the role of captain should not be underplayed at the Ryder Cup. The Englishman is a veteran of the contest and will be appearing in his 10th Ryder Cup this weekend at Hazeltine. He is also a close friend of European captain Darren Clarke, whose role he feels is vital to the team’s success. “Whoever says the captain doesn’t matter has obviously never played in a Ryder Cup and doesn’t know what they are talking about,” said Westwood. “A captain can make a difference, although they can make more of a difference by getting things wrong than getting things right.” Westwood also believes Clarke will be able to demonstrate the same cool head he had on the golf course in his captaincy role. He added: “He’s good at controlling himself in pressure situations and commands respect simply because of his record.”
