PLAY TIME: PERFECT THE ART OF WRITING
Writers can learn the ropes with 10-minute play format
Budding writers can get a crash course in drama this weekend at a playwriting workshop with a difference. The plot twist? The entire play has to be done and dusted in just 10 minutes.
The Short+Sweet Dubai Playwriting course will take place from Thursday to Saturday, taking writers from raw idea to first draft and even a performance by actors on the weekend.
Course tutor Alex Broun has seen more than 100 of his short plays produced across the globe, in countries including Australia, Canada, France, the Philippines and the US.
With more than 15 years’ experience working on 10-minute plays, the Australian knows a thing or two about the form. The practical, hands-on course will help writers get their own ideas off the ground. It also covers the basics of playwriting in general.
Alex explains: “The course is a great introduction to writing – it educates people about the tools needed to write a play, and at the same time empowers people to write a play.
“They will come along for the weekend and by the end of the weekend they will have written a 10-minute play. It is a good starting point and a great place to learn your craft. What story can you tell in 10 minutes?” The course covers the fundamentals. Character, dialogue, story (or situation), dramatic tension and theatricality are all explained. Alex also breaks down the writing process so potential playwrights will know how to come up with an entertaining idea. They will also learn the tools needed to write from scratch, and will gain an understanding in the basics of writing for theatre. Alex says: “It is all about trying to get people to think of interesting situations or ideas - whether in drama or in comedy. You need a good idea and you need to execute it well. It’s no use having a great idea if it is executed badly, and vice versa.” In today’s world, complete with YouTube and information overload, the short form is an ideal platform for modern audiences. Alex explains: “The world has sped up, and trying to keep people’s attention now is quite hard. “Our ability to absorb information has increased immensely so if someone was here from 400 years ago and got presented with the information we are used to, they would have a headache after half an hour because we get information from s o many sources. “Things can move so much faster now.” The Short+Sweet Playwriting course takes place at Constellation Studio in JLT this weekend - Thursday (7pm-10pm), Friday (10am-5pm) and Saturday (10am-6pm). Dhs1,000 or Dhs800 for students. Email email@example.com or call 052 761 4055 to book a place.
