Why don’t couples get to known each other first?

7 Days in Dubai - - DEAR 7 DAYS -

Whilst I understand that arranged marriages are a cultural norm in this region, I still don’t get why couples do not take appropriate time to really get to know each other before committing to marriage? Surely common sense would prevail, and the couple in question would be allowed by their parents to get to know one another in a quiet and ‘chaperoned’ family setting, and then move forward with wedding plans once the couple are comfortable to proceed? Living with a chain-smoker is a ghastly experience (my own father smokes like a trooper at home!) and I would have thought that as a non-smoker, the bride in question here would have checked something so important like this in the very beginning? What a sad situation here, especially for the unborn child, that it’s parents may already be divorced before it is even born! That’s Life UAE
