Robots, AI and drones dominate tech summit

7 Days in Dubai - - GITEX TECH WEEK - By Veathika Jain @veathika

Whether it’s a palm swipe to pay for a coffee or a 3D-doodler that prints what your child draws, GITEX Technology Week’s offers glimpse of the future for consumers and businesses alike.

All the latest gadgets and gizmos are on display for what is one of Dubai World Trade Centre’s largest events of the year.

The humanoid robots were present at virtually every stand, but technology to make the lives of the average consumer faster and easier was one of the key themes.

Visa is showcasing a payment system that allows customers to pay for goods by scanning their palm to access their bank account.

John McGuire, VP for Innovation and Strategic Partnerships for Visa in the CEMEA region, said: “Future ATMs will not need any cards or PIN num- bers. It will all be based on your bio- metrics and/or retina scan.

“Our ATM prototype has a palm scan that provides enhanced security for all ATM transactions.

“Be it supermarkets, banks, restaurants or online shopping, biometrics will soon be used for all transactions.”

Also on display is a range of ‘wallpaper’ organic light- emitting diode (OLED) signage, which looks like a super-thin television beaming adverts and displays. The glass is as thin as a credit card and is fixed to the wall with a magnetic strip. Audai Altaie, Regional Director of B2B Sales at LG Electronics, said: “A lot of retail spaces here don’t have space and walls, they have gypsum walls that need wooden or metal support to put up a 55inch screen. This one you can stick on any type of wall.” 3D printing continues to be a buzzword for 2016. A new 3D Doodler for kids and adults helps with creative pursuits. Monthar Atari, Operations Manager at Precise Group, said: “The Doodler is very unique. It prints or rather creates your sketches or drawings in 3D. It’s great for kids as we have different packs where they can make Lego blocks or do subject related stuff like physics, maths and arts.” GITEX runs until Thursday.

SALES PITCH: LG is offering retailers the chance to invest in wall-sized electronic signage boards for their stores

READY FOR DUTY: Dubai Police’s robot cop will be on duty in areas like JBR and Downtown
