Logistics landmark for GAC
The Westin Dubai launch marks milestone
The opening of The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City has marked a major milestone for Dubai: 100,000 hotel rooms across the emirate.
Westin’s new hotel, Dubai’s second Westin-branded property, opened in August and includes 1,004 rooms, including 142 suites, six restaurants and a spa – all speread across 41 floors.
Helal Saeed Almarri, Director General of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, said: “For the hotel sector, high demand from international travellers, and the consequent growth in tourism volumes, has been the cornerstone of fostering continued investment in supply enhancement, which has seen us cross this historic 100,000 rooms threshold.
“This has been a journey undertaken collaboratively and achieved through the enduring strength of our public and private partnerships that underscore Dubai’s maturing prominence on the world stage.”
Marriott International’s Alex Kyriakidis added: “We are proud that the opening of The Westin Dubai, Al Habtoor City has helped Dubai achieve its 100,000 rooms milestone. Dubai is now home to 30 of our properties across the world’s most-renowned brands, making Marriott International the largest hotel operator in the city.
“With plans to nearly double our presence in this market in the next five years, we are positioned to be the number one hospitality partner leading to Expo 2020.
“We see great potential in the future of this destination, and continue to support the efforts of Dubai Tourism while remaining focused on creating memorable experiences for visitors across Marriott’s brands.”
Looking to the future, Dubai Tourism expects occupied room nights in hotels and hotel apartments to reach 35.9 million, representing a 10.8 per cent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) from the end of 2015 to the end of 2018.
Overall room supply is expected to reflect similar growth, reaching 134,000 rooms by the end of 2018. GAC Dubai’s contract logistics division handled one million cubic metres (CBM) of stock in the first eight months of 2016, and is on track to hit an annual record through of 1.5 million CBM by year-end. The milestone continues the growth of the business, which handled 874,000 CBM of stock in 2014, and one million last year. Neil McMaster, General Manager - Contract Logistics at GAC Dubai, said: “We now have the facilities and expertise in place to support sustainable expansion. “We are taking a very focused approach towards adding new clients in fast moving operations – such as food contracts with high pallet throughput volumes and retail contracts with low pallet volume but high piece quantity. “The result is a balanced portfolio that is delivering rapid results backed by excellence in service delivery.” GAC opened the region’s first distribution centre in Dubai in 1993.
