Dubai Po­lice con­duct labour camp protest drill

Dozens of Dubai Po­lice of­fi­cers have taken part in a drill to pre­pare them for re­spond­ing to ri­ots.

The force re­leased a video that fea­tures a group of men posing as labour­ers who have taken up weapons and are protest­ing. Of­fi­cers wear­ing pro­tec­tive gear and with riot shields ar­rive and sur­round the men be­fore ne­go­ti­at­ing. Sev­eral are also seen be­ing ar­rested.

The op­er­a­tion took place in the force’s desert train­ing cam­pus in Al Ruwayah.

Bri­gadier Gen­eral Ab­dul­lah Ali Ab­dul­lah Has­san Ghaithi, from Dubai Po­lice, said the ex­er­cise was to en­sure of­fi­cers can han­dle a real-life riot, “if it takes place”.

On Jan­uary 3 of this year, as many as 500 labour­ers ri­oted at a camp in Jebel Ali, caus­ing close to Dhs300,000 of dam­age. The in­ci­dent was sparked af­ter a se­ries of thefts and a row with the man­age­ment over not be­ing al­lowed to lock their rooms.

Eight men were charged with start­ing the riot.
