POLICE GEARING UP TO TACKLE RIOTS
Dubai Police conduct labour camp protest drill
Dozens of Dubai Police officers have taken part in a drill to prepare them for responding to riots.
The force released a video that features a group of men posing as labourers who have taken up weapons and are protesting. Officers wearing protective gear and with riot shields arrive and surround the men before negotiating. Several are also seen being arrested.
The operation took place in the force’s desert training campus in Al Ruwayah.
Brigadier General Abdullah Ali Abdullah Hassan Ghaithi, from Dubai Police, said the exercise was to ensure officers can handle a real-life riot, “if it takes place”.
On January 3 of this year, as many as 500 labourers rioted at a camp in Jebel Ali, causing close to Dhs300,000 of damage. The incident was sparked after a series of thefts and a row with the management over not being allowed to lock their rooms.
Eight men were charged with starting the riot.
