Driver hit with attempted murder rap
A lorry driver has been charged with attempted murder after a man was stabbed in a row over a parking space.
The 43-year old Indian driver told the Dubai Court of First Instance that he was defending himself.
He told the courtroom: “I didn’t try to kill him, he was the one who tried to kill me. I just defended myself.”
Prosecutors said that on April 11 this year, the victim was parking his lorry in the Ras Al Khor area of Dubai when he saw the defendant parking his lorry on the same spot.
The 43-year-old victim, also from India, said in records: “I was politely blaming him for parking his lorry in my spot as all the drivers know it’s the spot where I usually park my lorry. “I left him and parked the lorry away.” The court was told that the victim went to a nearby restaurant where he bought dinner, By Ali Al Shouk which he took back to his lorry, when the defendant arrived to confront him.
“His arms were behind his back and he looked angry and drunk. Suddenly he punched me in the face and raised a knife from behind his back and stabbed me in the chest and stomach,” the victim added.
Other witnesses said that they saw the attacker stabbing the victim and that he was shouting "die, die" as he stabbed him.
The victim yelled for help, the court heard. A Pakistani man called Dubai Police who arrived and stopped the fight.
An ambulance arrived and the victim was taken to Rashid Hospital, where medics saved his life.The case has been adjourned.
