Eight construction firms in the UAE capital have been fined for making employees live in crammed and substandard accommodation. Abu Dhabi Municipality released images of the living quarters in which workers stayed on three-deck beds with others sleeping on the floor. In some images, kitchen items such as saucepans and plates were placed in filthy boards next to the workers’ beds. Abu Dhabi Municipality yesterday said such poor accommodations pose a threat to the safety of workers and the community. Officials said the violators were caught during recent inspections targeting permanent and temporary workers’ accommodation in Al Shahama and suburban areas. The municipality said in a statement: “Compliance with such requirements would protect workers from dangers of workshops and occupational outlets, ensure compliance with environmental, health and safety standards and provide maximum safety at work.”
