Competitors in the inaugural Ras Al Khaimah 2016 Golf Challenge experienced ‘high tee’ with a difference, as they scaled Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest mountain, before firing a series of drives into the rocky caverns of the Al Hajar mountains. Sweden’s Joel Sjöholm, Netherlands’ Jurrian Van der Vaart and Monaco’s Sandro Piaget were a couple of hundred metres short of Jebel Jais’s 1,934m peak, but the trio showed no fear of heights as they took selfies and enjoyed a picnic in RAK’s tourist spot. Sjöholm, 31, said: “You can’t quite see Oman from here but it’s fascinating to know this stretch of mountains link the final two tournaments of the season; standing up here today has really brought it home that we’re chasing end of season honours now.” The Ras Al Khaimah Golf Challenge is the penultimate event of the year on the Challenge Tour and will be followed by the season-ending NBO Golf Classic Grand Final in Muscat.
