Chauffeur fined after video of D 5 Rolls-Royce posted online
By Ali Al Shouk and Shoshana Kedem The driver of a millionaire businessman whose car is fitted with the Dhs33 million number plate has been hit with a fine and black points for parking in a disabled bay.
Balvinder Sahni’s white Rolls Royce – which carries the D 5 plate that he bought at auction just weeks ago – was caught on video when it was backed into a spot outside Aspin Commercial Tower on Sheikh Zayed Road on Saturday.
In the video, posted on social media, Sahni is seen getting into the vehicle before they drive off.
Dubai Police said they issued the fine after spotting the video posted online on Monday. The car is registered to Sahni, but police transferred the fine to his driver when the businessman explained he was not behind the wheel.
General Khamis Mattar Al Muzaina, Director of Dubai Police, said that the owner came to ask about the fine and explained what had happened. Al Muzaina told 7DAYS: “Nobody is above the law in Dubai. “We fined the car as we would any other car committing the same violation, regardless of its plate number.” He confirmed police first spotted the incident on a video on social media. The same video shows unoccupied parking spaces two metres away from the disabled spot. Al Muzaina continued: “The owner of the vehicle apologised for the violation and pointed out that he wasn’t the one who was driving the car.
“We asked him about who was driving the car to add the black points to his driving licence and asked him to pay the fine.
“It’s just a simple fine for someone parked in special needs spot and the matter is finished now.”
Sahni told 7DAYS that he was happy to resolve the matter with police, but was angry that he had been secretly filmed and the footage shared online.
He said he plans to take legal action over the video. He said: “It was only parked for 50 seconds, we were carrying heavy bags that we had to put in the trunk.
“I was in a meeting with big interior designers for my new hotel at around 2.30pm and the car was parked down there and I went down and got in. “I’m not in the wrong, it’s my driver.” He added: “I’m in the police station and I’m filing a criminal case against the people who took my video.”
The fine for parking in a disabled bay is Dhs1,000 and four black points.
Dubai Police issued 4,215 fines to motorists who parked in disabled spaces, without the necessary permit, in the first half of this year.
