Sharjah set to start search for oil and gas

Sharjah National Oil Corporation is to carry out a “massive” 3D survey in the hope of finding new oil and gas reserves. The seismic surveys help in identifying potential deep reservoirs of oil and gas and will cover an area of 500sq km, located 40km southeast of Sharjah city. Most of this area had not been covered by earlier 3D seismic surveys. The survey is expected to be completed by the end of December. Undertaking such research involves dealing with a raft of challenges as the area includes massive infrastructure as well as populated areas, not to mention the wildlife protected areas, a news release said. Oil analyst Robin Mills, CEO of Dubaibased Qamar Energy, said: “The area of this seismic survey is geologically complicated in structure, and that is why they are acquiring a 3D survey instead of the simpler and cheaper 2D surveys. “There is quite a good chance of discovering gas in this area if they can get a good view of the structures from this survey before drilling.” He said Sharjah has four onshore gasfields in the Sajaa area, which were originally quite large but are now depleted and producing well below their historic maximum. Mills added: “Still, the gas production is important for the emirate’s power plants and for government revenues.”
